Bat Faced Cuphea October 7, 2012

Bat Face is a really fun plant to grow.  It gets about 2 feet tall.  It responds well (throws up a lot of new blooms) to shearing because it gets really leggy, so don't be afraid to cut it back.  Cuphea will die back in the winter, but it will come back in the spring.
You can see why it is called Bat Face!  How cute is that?
The red flowers are a stand-out.
There are lots of varieties of cuphea (pronounced coo-fee-uh).  There is a variety called Tiny Mice which looks a lot like Bat Face.  There is a very tall variety called Cigar Plant which flowers orange and yellow, and (not surprisingly) the flowers are shaped like little lit cigars.  I have Cigar Plant growing next to the pool.  There is a Texas native variety which is pink, but it is said to be pretty tender, and I cannot baby plants through the winter weather.
