Goldenrod the Medicinal Herb

Goldenrod blooms in the fall. I think it's really pretty. The goldenrod above is just about to really burst into bloom. The variety I grow is called Fireworks Goldenrod. Fireworks is a bit shorter than most kinds of goldenrod, and it doesn't spread as vigorously by suckers as the larger varieties. The flowers will go to seed, and it is best to cut spent flowers to keep it from going too crazy.
Goldenrod is also a medicinal herb, a very useful plant to grow. The flowers should be harvested just after they form. The leaves should be harvested when they are young and fresh. Both can be dried and stored in glass jars. Taken as a tea, the leaves and flowers can be used as an expectorant, an anti-inflammatory, a diuretic, and a mild sedative. It is also used to treat kidney problems, coughs, fevers, sore throats, and asthma.
