Some Days at the Farm 03/04-06/10

Weather was very pretty.
  • Laid down a lot of crushed granite around the Greenhouse.
  • Began laying down granite in the Star Garden.
  • Planted 2 very big Sum and Substance Hostas around the Fringe Tree.
  • Shredded leaves, mulched, and fertilized almost everything in the Shade Garden. It's time to fertilize the Rose Garden and also time to spray for black spot.
  • Moved a small Bay Laurel tree from a pot into the Greenhouse Garden.
  • Sowed lots and lots of seeds - Laura Bush Petunias (they are very easy to start from seed and they bloom profusely in our Texas heat all summer. There is a purple variety and a new hot pink variety), Tidy Tips, Tansy, Nicotiana, Soapwort, Nasturium, Black Eyed Susan Vine, Celosia, Horehound, Hyssop, Nigella, and Cypress Vine. Who knows what will sprout and thrive, we'll see. Some of the seeds are so miniscule that I can barely see them. That means it is hard to tell where they landed in the soil. I order 100 seeds and I think I will have plenty, but they are practically invisible, they just disappear. Anyway, it is an interesting experience giving seeds a try. It really feels like a miracle when you see the seedlings sprout.
  • Worked a long time in the Infinity Garden clearing away debris around all the plants.
  • My husband replaced some hoses and re-set the sprinklers. The sprinkler situation has to be checked on a regular basis. It's not unusual for things to go wrong with all of that.
  • Added some good soil to the front flowerbeds and mulched the Indian Hawthorns. There was a lot of wash-out from heavy rains. We need gutters!
  • Cleared out a lot of dead debris from the plants in the Star Garden. Everything is beginning to grow up from the roots. Always fun to behold.
  • Dug up some Homestead Purple Verbena from the Star Garden and moved it to the Long Border. This is a really beautiful perennial flowering ground cover.
