The Shade Garden stays dormant for a long time after the weather begins to warm up. The only green is coming from the holly fern (which is an evergreen fern), the columbine (enjoys cool weather and is getting ready to bloom), the toad lily, the ligularia (due to a mild-ish winter it did not go dormant like the last two years), the coral berry, the Sweetspire, the Mahonias, and the azaleas (barely hanging on after a brutal drought last year).
In April the hostas will appear. In May the caladiums I plant this spring will appear. The southern wood ferns have already begun to emerge from dormancy. The gingers show up in March.
That makes the Shade Garden interesting as well as a source of impatience. Life unfolds gradually in the shade.
