What's Blooming Now - Red Buckeye Tree 03/4/2012

My Red Buckeye looked so pretty on Saturday morning with the sun shining down on it. This tree is a Texas native.

I think it has a very prehistoric look to it with the big, lobed leaves.

The flowers have not opened yet. They look like red salvia flowers when they are open.

This tree is very drought tolerant. I planted it in a spot that is inconvenient for me to water it. It made it fine through the drought last summer despite getting no rain water to supplement. It tends to go dormant in August to protect itself. So it is not a very good "front yard in a subdivision" tree.

Beuatiful leaves!
