I dug up these irises in a ditch in front of a farm house on Sandtown Rd which is why I call them In The Ditch Irises. They were clearly planted in a row just inside the fence (there are still hundreds growing along the fence line), but over time they spilled over into the ditch and they are growing happily there as well amongst the weeds, wildflowers, and shaded by cedar trees and pin oaks.
In the process of studying about southern heirloom bulbs I have decided these are most likely what is know as Cemetery Whites. These irises grow in gardens throughout Burton, Tx, both around houses in the little town-proper of Burton and in the yards of the farm houses on FM 1697 and beyond.
