Coral Honeysuckle April 14, 2022

The little saying about vines which I just love is:  The first year they sleep, the second year they creep, the third year they leap.  This is my second year growing this vine on the front arbor.  It is having a pretty spring bloom.  Something really interesting happened last winter regarding this vine.  It bloomed intermittently, and it had a couple of blooms on the vine when the weather dropped to 20 degrees for 2 days.  The blooms never died.  This is a very hardy vine.  It is native to Texas.  It is not invasive.  It increases very, very slowly compared to Japanese Honeysuckle (which is invasive).  Unfortunately, Coral Honeysuckle does not have a scent.  That is disappointing.  Japanese Honeysuckle on the other hand has the wonderful smell that everyone associates with honeysuckle.  And every adult remembers in their childhood pulling the long stamen from the honeysuckle flower and tasting the little drop of honey on the end!  That memory won't be repeated with Coral Honeysuckle, but it's a great native vine.
